notes RIDE NOTES…

Started my coast to coast ride today from San Diego to St. Augustine, FL. I dipped my back tire (actually both tires and my shoes thanks to a wave I didn’t see coming) into the pacific ocean this morning and started riding east. Today’s portion took me as far as Alpine, CA where I’ll be spending the night. I’m planning to take off Sunday so tomorrow I will need to ride a somewhat “double” to make up for it. The first several days of this ride consists of lots of elevation changes so a double still wont be many miles, but lots of ups and downs.

My rear view mirror mounted to my left handlebar was never mounted quite as good as I would have liked and due to some of the rough roads today it fell off and broke. I got lost (sort of) for the first time today. I took a left where I thought I was supposed to and it was a bike trail but it soon turned to dirt and became a mountain bike trail. I came across another rider and asked him if this was the trail to Florida, but he just looked at me like I was crazy and kept riding.

I gained about 2,000′ in elevation today and all in all it was a good 1st day.

distance DISTANCE…

Overall: 36 miles

Lodging LODGING…

    1. This sounds like something you’d love to do at some time. This is an unbelievable adventure and you can’t even fathom it till you are actually doing it.

  1. Tom, glad you finally started the trip. Can relate to your start in San Diego and your 1st nights stay in Alpine. As you know I’ve spent much time there. In fact, I’ve stayed at the Ayers Inn and ate apple pie in Julian. Let me know when you’re getting close to Tucson and we’ll try to meet up. Stay safe and keep the rubber on the asphalt. Larry Perry

    1. Good to see you yesterday and thanks again for lunch. I’m sure we’ll work together again somewhere, some place, some time!!!
