notes RIDE NOTES…

Woke up to 50 degrees in my tent this morning.  The picture above is just one of my many roommates from last night.  The communal bath house is solar powered so I wanted to be first to use the hot water.  It was plenty hot at first but ran out very quick.  Sorry to the next few people to use the showers!  It was a really strange shower house with just a few wooden slats for walls.  Anyone who wanted to see in easily could.  It’s definitely not for everyone and hopefully not for me again, but this was my only option in Marfa, TX.

Short easy ride to Alpine, TX today.  I met a fellow rider (Cheyenne) outside of Alpine and rode with her the last 5 miles to a local bike shop.  She is getting some brake work done and I got some new flat resistant tires.  Hopefully these tires are thicker and will cut down on the amount of flats, we’ll see.  Cheyenne’s plan is to ride around the Big Bend area for a few days then continue on the Southern Tier route.  She is a pretty strong rider so I’m guessing she’ll catch up with me in a week or two.  After the bike shop I stopped at McDonalds for a snack, then found a cheap dive no name motel.  This motel is by far the worst of the trip so far, but the sheets appear to be clean and it does have a shower.  It’s amazing how basic your needs become on a trip like this.  With that said, I really hope my motel choices improve as I ride east.  This motel does have one selling point in that McDonalds is next door.

My cyclemeter app stopped at 999.9 miles  Evidently it’s not capable of more than 1000 miles?!  Oh well, I’ll reset it and ride another 1000.

  1. Glad things are going well except for lodging. I am so proud of you for slumming it, that bath was gross……….
    Enjoy the ride!!

    1. All is going well. Although lodging is bad at times, after a long day of riding whatever you find is fine. It’s amazing what you can settle for when you have absolutely no choice.

    1. Thanks Bill. Still going strong, but West Texas is a little to rural for me. It’s a challenge to find lodging, food, supplies, etc. hopefully it will get easier when I get closer to Central Texas. Other than that all is good.
