notes RIDE NOTES…

Another hot and humid ride from Crestview, FL to Chipley, FL today.  70 miles today, but the roads were good with bike lanes and good bridges.  I did not expect the rolling hills in the Florida panhandle.  Most of the elevation today was between 100′ and 300′ with many, many, ups and downs.  SR-90 is a very rural road with very few places to eat.  I passed a small diner in Careyville, FL called French’s that had a full parking lot so I assumed it would be a good place for lunch.  Evidently all the locals go there for the buffet, which was very good, but maybe not that smart since I still had 30 miles to go in the high heat and humidity.

Although SR-90 is a great road for riding, finding lodging is not so easy.  All of the motels on SR-90 are the very low class Indian run motels that I prefer to avoid.  I have had to ride several miles out of the way to find a decent hotel on I-10.  I found a Super 8 which isn’t great but it’s WAY better than anything on SR-90.

SIRI tells me I have 294 miles to St. Augustine, FL, so with the roads I’m riding it will probably be about 350 miles.  I think I’ll have my front tire in the Atlantic Ocean in 6-7 days from now.

I must have overdone it a bit today with the mileage and the heat.  After taking a shower I laid down and took a nap before supper, which is something I never do.  Went to Wendy’s for supper than early to bed as always.

What an unbelievable adventure.  Although I prefer doing this ride alone, I do notice people distancing themselves from me sometimes.  Since I’m by myself I wonder if people really think I’m a long distance bicyclist or just some dirty homeless old man riding his bike with absolutely no plan of ever going anywhere.  Who knows???

  1. So you really didn’t want Kent to ride with you & were just being nice asking. Or no, you knew he would say no!

We are so proud of you, have followed you regularly. Probably should have commented more to let you know you weren’t out there on your own.. Cannot believe you are going to finish so soon. I KNOW SOMEONE PERSONALLY WHO BIKED ACROSS AMERICA!!!

    1. I was thinking of Kent when I entered the short state of Alabama. He would have had a good time, but at times the traffic is brutal. I’ve still got a long few days to get to the finish line with the extreme heat and humidity. Thanks for following me.

  2. I think the “Dirty Old Man” is probably what they are thinking! Ha Ha
Way to go and stay safe on these last few legs.

    1. I’m sure you’re correct, and it’s not a real comforting feeling at times. People probably think I’m homeless wondering where my next meal might come from. I would probably think the same if I were them. If they only knew how harmless I really am!!!

I’m actually taking a couple of days off to tend to Chris’s wishes and will be back to riding on Tuesday and should finish next weekend.
